If you don't feel comfortable, don't go. Take your time to get to know your matches, ask the questions you need to know and do the research you need to do to feel comfortable meeting with your matches in-person.
When meeting with your matches, select or agree to a public meeting place with a consistent and strong amount of foot traffic. Schedule this meeting during the daytime with plenty of visibility.
Before you embark on your date; tell a trusted friend, relative and/or colleague who you are planning on meeting and when you are planning on meeting them, at a minimum. Additional details relating to the specifics of your meeting and involved parties should also be shared with your confidant. The more confidants aware, the merrier.
Be sure to have your personal electronic devices capable of communication and/or location tracking with you at all times. Before embarking on your meeting, ensure the devices are fully charged.
Ensure you have a reliable and trusted form of transportation. It can't hurt to have your own ride, cab money, a reliable friend on call or all of the above! Before you depart, make sure that you have plenty of gas in your personal vehicle and that the vehicle is in a safe and operable condition, if that is your primary form of transportation. It's advisable to park in a public area with lighting and consistent foot traffic at night. If you're counting on a ride share app, make sure that it's downloaded on your mobile device and logged in before you depart.
Before you head it, it can be beneficial to make sure you have checklist of safety related items with you. These items can include a flashlight, electronic device charger, mace, emergency cash, a first aid kit, a firearm, condoms, emergency medial information, hydrating fluids, jumper cables, sunblock, ice scrapers, road reflectors and a variety of other items. Please respect your local laws and ensure that you do not bring anything with you that you are unable to legally possess or properly use.
When on-location, be sure to keep aware of your surroundings. Be careful not to leave any drinks or personal items unattended. If you are changing your plans or location, be sure to alert your trusted confidant of such changes. Try not to divulge any personal information that could lead an individual to your home or workplace. Avoid disclosing any sensitive financial information. If you feel that you are in an unsafe situation or heading towards one, leave immediately. If you are unable to leave, contact emergency services by dialing 911 (or your local equivalent - if you are out of town, be sure to learn of your local equivalent beforehand) and ask bystanders for help.
The meeting has gone great, everything is beyond what you expected and now, it's time to head home. Don't spoil everything with a poor exit! If you are not able to make your way home safely or legally, it's time to outsource to a trusted friend, relative, colleague or transportation service.
